Co-Design Cases

  • Problem: At the midpoint of their strategic plan, a major university library system realized that their impending fiscal situation did not spell doom – but it did spell course correction.

Solution: Through deep engagement with the entire team, we sun-setted some initiatives, scaled back others, and double-down on promising projects. No more team silos – just one clear plan.

  • Problem: After rocking the creation of an exciting new strategic plan, this metro library realized that they needed to revisit their operational programs and services.

Solution: Through multiple session we worked together to give every program and service the sniff test. What stays? What goes? The new operational plan is lean and (not-so) mean.

  • Problem: A major American association wanted to reimagine their professional development offerings to make the more appealing to all members.

Solution: Using knowledge from the LLEAD program we co-designed a learning experience for their flagship course that put their new academy on the right track.

  • Problem: An academic library wanted to refresh their stale strategic plan, but they had limited resources to hire an outside facilitator.

Solution: We worked together to co-create a solution that they could execute on their own. Using a train the trainer model meant no travel for us and more facilitation skills for them.

  • Problem: A regional academic library association had just wrapped up some big-picture planning. But they needed to nail down their shared values.

Solution: Together, we uncovered the unique ingredients that make their work meaningful and magnetic. The result? A values-driven vision that brought their strategy to life with purpose and personality.

  • Problem: An independent European academy serving the library and information world and wanted to deliver leadership programming that packed a punch.

Solution: Instead of cooking up everything from scratch we crafted a plan to transport and translate Canada’s long-running LLEAD program to the Old World.

  • Problem: A major library in the middle of Canada announced a strategic organizational restructuring. Library staff were… uh… skeptical.

Solution: Partnering with the Senior Leadership Team, we cooked up a full engagement plan. Each Working Group received the tools and support to dream big and design fresh workflows – and learn some new facilitation skills in the process.

  • Problem: A statewide university network was in a tight spot. Funding was drying up from all sources. The team needed to regroup and dream up a more promising long-term future.

Solution: Through a collaborative design process, we explored the options, weighed the trade-offs, and zeroed in on a path that felt both promising and practical… oh and we had some craft time too!

Co-Design Questions

  • It depends. We will put together RFPs for projects that are in our wheelhouse. We are a small facilitation and training company in the Okanagan Valley (British Columbia, Canada), so we pick our spots. If you have a project that might suit us, we’d be happy to explore possibilities.

  • Yes, we love collaboration. Sometimes we function as the primary consultant on a project and sometimes we sub-contract with other firms. Check out our list of regular collaborators.

  • We are an authorized partner for Everything DiSC, The Five Behaviors, Lego Serious Play and the Team Performance Model from Drexler/Sibbet. We also borrow liberally from Liberating Structures, Strategyzer, the International Association of Facilitators, the Creative Problem Solving Institute, SessionLab, and a shoutout to Facilopedia by Mischief Makers.

  • We design experiences that engage all stakeholders whether the session is onsite or online. Using creative activities with clear instructions, we encourage participants to push themselves and their group to better solutions. Ultimately, the goal is to get participants to engage and share their perspectives. If participants leave the session without sharing, then the organization loses the benefit of their insights.
